What age can my child start BMX at your club?We welcome riders from as young as 4 years old, as long as they can confidently ride standing up, but this isn't always essential. We do also offer children to join in on balance bikes if they wish, to get a feel of the BMX environment. There is no upper age limit—our sessions cater to riders of all ages and abilities.

When are your sessions for beginners?Our beginner coaching sessions take place every Thursday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Please arrive by 6:15 pm to get kitted out and meet the coaches.

Do I need to book in advance, or can I just turn up?You can just turn up for your first session! However, we recommend filling out our quick New Rider Form beforehand to ensure we have your details and can cater to your needs.

What should my child wear and bring to their first session?Riders need a full-face helmet, gloves, and a bike. If you don’t have a helmet or gloves, we offer them for hire at £3, payable at the Volair Leisure Centre reception. If your child has their own bike, feel free to bring it. If not, you can hire a bike from us—just note that they’re issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

What is the cost of your sessions?The first session is free! After that, it’s £5 per session. Bike and helmet hire is an additional £3, payable to Volair Leisure Centre.

Do I need to purchase a BMX bike for my child?No, you don’t need to purchase a BMX bike right away. You can hire one from us for £3 per session until you’re sure your child enjoys the sport. If your child has a non-BMX bike, you can bring it as a backup in case our hire bikes are fully booked.

What if my child doesn’t have a full-face helmet or gloves?We can provide a full-face helmet and gloves for hire at £3 per session. These are required for safety reasons. We recommend purchasing your own equipment once your child decides to continue with the sport.

Can we watch a session before joining?Absolutely! You’re welcome to come and watch our sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Please check our Facebook page for any updates or cancellations due to weather before coming down.

Is there a specific day for taster sessions?Yes, our Thursday evening sessions are the best time to try BMX for the first time. The first session is free, and there’s no obligation to join afterward.

What happens if the weather is bad?We typically post cancellations on our Facebook page around 4pm at the latest on the day of the session if the weather is unsuitable. Please check before traveling to avoid disappointment.

Do you offer weekend sessions?Yes, our coach, Tyler, runs novice & expert coaching sessions on Sundays. You can find more information and book through Crank BMX Coaching or contact them via WhatsApp at 0787 642 6080.

Can siblings participate or just watch?Siblings are welcome to join in as long as they meet the age and skill requirements. If they are hesitant or too young, they can still watch and see what the sessions are like.

Can my child use their non-BMX bike at the track?Yes, your child can use a non-BMX bike if necessary, especially if our hire bikes are unavailable. However, a BMX bike is preferable as it is designed for the track and will provide a better experience.

How can I hire a bike and equipment?You can hire bikes and equipment from Volair Leisure Centre. Pay £3 at their reception and bring the ticket to one of our volunteers, who will get your child kitted out. Please note that bike availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Do I need to stay during the session?Yes, we require a parent or guardian to stay on-site during the session. You are welcome to watch and support your child as they ride.

Can my child try BMX even if they are a beginner?Absolutely! Our beginner sessions are designed for those new to BMX, and our coaches will assess and provide tailored guidance to help them build confidence and skills.

How do I join Merseyside BMX Club?You can join online through British Cycling. We offer Junior, Adult, and Family memberships. Please visit our membership page for more details and to sign up.

What are the benefits of club membership?Membership includes access to club sessions, insurance cover through British Cycling, and the opportunity to compete in races. Members can also purchase club merchandise, including personalized race jerseys and plates.

Do I need to buy a BMX bike before joining?No, you don’t need to buy a BMX bike immediately. You can hire one from us for £3 per session until you decide if the sport is right for you.

What is the difference between novice and expert racing?Novice Racing: Perfect for beginners, with guidance from officials and volunteers. You can compete at novice level for one full season before progressing to expert. Expert Racing: Requires a British Cycling race license and a MYLAPS transponder. The competition is more intense but fun and rewarding.

How do I get a race license?You can obtain a race license from British Cycling. A silver membership and provisional license are required for expert-level regional races, while a bronze membership is sufficient for novice racing.

How do I know which age category my child falls into?BMX year groups run from January 1st to December 31st. Simply subtract your child’s birth year from the current year to find their category. For example, if your child was born in 2013 and the event is in 2025, they would compete in the 12-year-old category (2025 - 2013 = 12).
