Our coaching caters to all abilities, guiding riders from balance bikes to their first pedal off the start hill, and developing some of the best riders in Britain. Throughout the year, we run a comprehensive rider development program designed to nurture our riders through the BMX levels and enhance their race skills. Our main coaching night is on Thursday, where we deliver sessions to all levels in our rider developer programme

Coach Karl
Coach Karl, our Level 1 coach at Merseyside BMX Club, brings a wealth of BMX racing experience from competitions across the country. With years of race knowledge under his belt, Karl is passionate about sharing his expertise and inspiring the next generation of riders.

Coach Michael
Coach Michael is our dedicated coach for our level 1, 2, & 3 riders at Merseyside BMX Club. With a passion for introducing newcomers to the sport, Michael excels at teaching foundational skills and building confidence in young and inexperienced riders. His patient and supportive coaching style ensures that every novice has a positive and encouraging start to their BMX journey.

Coach Quillan, our Lead Coach & level 4 coach, a top-tier BMX racer and coach, brings his expertise to Merseyside BMX Club with monthly coaching sessions. Coaching Levels
Level 1
Requirements:

Riders must be able to ride a bike while standing without assistance.
Objectives:
-
Teach essential flatland skills needed for BMX riding.

Develop the fundamental techniques necessary for navigating a BMX track with confidence.

Instill reflexive reactions through reinforced learning for quick decision-making on the track.

Introduce riders to using the starting gate without requiring full balancing skills.
Level 3
Transition from Novice to Expert Level Racing
Requirements:

A coach will review the rider to determine readiness for advancement to Level 3.

Riders should be competing at the Regional level in novice races and showing progress towards expert level.

Riders must demonstrate the ability to balance on the gate, execute proper racing lines, and employ correct pumping techniques.
Objectives:

Develop advanced race skills, including manualing and jumping.

Perfect gating techniques.
-
Begin preparation for National races, including understanding rider expectations.

Enhance off-bike skills such as fitness training and mental focus.

Improve flat-land skills in preparation for RSR (Regional School of Racing) and CCT (Core Club Training).

Track Navigation:

Ensure riders can navigate the track efficiently by understanding the shortest route, optimal pedalling, and appropriate use of pumping, manualing, or jumping techniques.
Level 2
Requirements
Riders must complete and be signed off at Level 1 before progressing to Level 2. However, exceptions may apply for those transferring from other clubs or with prior Level 2-3 BMX race experience.
Objectives

Familiarise riders with the expectations and requirements for Club and Regional level racing, including race day preparation.

Begin developing essential race skills such as cornering, pumping, and mastering balance and technique at the start gate.

Teach riders how to navigate the track efficiently, including identifying optimal pedaling points, when to pump, and whether to manual or jump key sections.
Level 4
Overview:
Level 4 is designed for our most advanced riders who are competing at the National level or higher.
Requirements:

Selection is at the discretion of the Head Coach.

Riders must be actively competing at the National level or preparing to move up to this tier.

Must have mastered all skills from Level 3.
Objectives:

Refine existing skills and develop advanced techniques, such as jump-to-manuals and manual hops.

Enhance reaction times at the starting gate.

Increase leg speed and power through targeted training.

Optimize race day preparation, focusing on nutrition, rest, and warm-up routines.

Incorporate psychological training to improve attitude and manage race-day nerves.
